At Over the Limit , Ryback defeated Camacho in another squash match. On the July 27 SmackDown , Ryback began his first feud since returning to the main roster against Jinder Mahal , after Mahal lost via count out instead of continuing to wrestle. Ryback faced Mahal in a rematch on August 3 SmackDown , but won via disqualification after Mahal struck him with a microphone.
On October 28 at the pay-per-view, Ryback's thirty-eight match undefeated streak was broken by Punk due to a low blow and fast count by referee Brad Maddox. On the November 13 Raw , Ryback gained revenge against Brad Maddox by squashing him in a match before throwing him into an ambulance, thus denying Maddox a chance at joining the WWE roster as a wrestler. On November 18 at Survivor Series, Ryback was unsuccessful in the championship match after he was attacked by Seth Rollins , Dean Ambrose , and Roman Reigns , who powerbombed him through the announce table, allowing Punk to pin Cena and retain the title.
The following night on Raw , Ryback was again attacked by Rollins, Ambrose, and Reigns, now collectively known as The Shield , before they again powerbombed him through the announce table after Ryback attempted to attack Punk while he was celebrating his year-long reign as WWE Champion. Later that night, Ryback attacked Punk with a ladder and chair before finally powerbombing him through a table.
Punk suffered a legitimate knee injury during to the attack, and the title match was postponed. On January 27 at the Royal Rumble , Ryback entered the Royal Rumble match as the thirtieth and final entrant and eliminated five superstars before being the last man eliminated by John Cena. Ryback would then resume his rivalry with The Shield on the February 4 Raw , when he teamed up with John Cena and Sheamus to attack the stable. This culminated in a six-man tag team match on February 17 at Elimination Chamber , where The Shield emerged victorious when Seth Rollins pinned Ryback for the win.
Ryback then began a feud with Mark Henry after several non-verbal confrontations led to them attacking Drew McIntyre with their finishing moves in an attempt to one-up each other. The following week on Raw , Ryback explained his attack on Cena as stepping out from his shadow and getting revenge for Cena not having his back against The Shield; Ryback got a measure of revenge later that night, by allowing the Shield to attack Cena. After becoming the number one contender to the WWE Championship, Ryback continued his feud with Cena by attacking him on several occasions while also having confrontations with The Shield.

The following week on Raw , Cena accepted Ryback's challenge, but announced their match would instead be a 3 Stages of Hell match ; the first fall a lumberjack match , the second a tables match and the third an ambulance match.
At the pay-per-view on June 16, Ryback won the lumberjack match, but went on to lose both the tables and ambulance matches and his shot at the WWE Championship. Also as part of the gimmick, Ryback would back away from fighting opponents of equal size and taking advantage of smaller and vulnerable opponents.
Despite being a bully himself, Ryback claimed he hated bullies and vowed to stop CM Punk and anyone else who acted as such. The feud ended the following night on Raw , when Punk defeated Ryback in a Street Fight match after forcing him to submit to the Anaconda Vise , marking Ryback's first ever submission loss.

On July 2, it was announced that Ryback and Axel would be competing for the vacant WWE Intercontinental Championship in an over the top battle royal at Battleground , but neither Ryback or Axel managed to win. Not only has Ryback become one of the hottest names on the independent wrestling scene since his departure from WWE, but he has also started his own podcast, wrote a book and launched a line of nutritional products.
In a recent interview promoting his new book, Wake Up! While there is no denying that WWE helped build his mainstream appeal, Ryback has taken his future into his own hands and is building an empire without anyone's help. When asked about the most rewarding experience of his career thus far, Ryback spoke honestly. By far it was the greatest day of my career," Ryback said. I equate it to The Shawshank Redemption , that I was finally released.
I did it on my own terms and conditions. Ryback deserves to have a chip on his shoulder. After using the opportunity WWE presented him to get over organically with wrestling fans, his character was altered, and his storylines were dropped.
While Ryback was given a great push early in his career, long-term momentum is something WWE never properly provided. That always bothered me that they never tried to clear that up. We were having great matches at live events, but I had no TV time the whole month before that pay per view and no build up for the match. I knew, at the end, Kalisto was going over — and the bigger heel I could be in the match, then the bigger the babyface will be at the end of the match once he goes over on me.
After the match, they were furious with me that I was doing anything to get heat. It was so unprofessional on so many levels.
Punk and I are two entirely different human beings, but I think we shared some of the same viewpoints toward the WWE as far as business. My beliefs are entirely different than his. Ryback is not afraid to speak out, and he expressed his frustration over the way McMahon booked him over the past five years. Ryback had the look and worked extremely hard to deliver in the ring, but, as he explained, there were no plans to ever elevate him to a higher spot in the company.
And there was nothing he could do to change that. That should not be the case. Ryback started off red-hot with WWE in , even producing successful buy rates while main-eventing consecutive pay per views with CM Punk. I had half the amount of merchandise that he had, but would beat him in shirts, chains, and photos on some nights and be right there with him the rest.
From a business standpoint, if you see a guy who is red hot and the crowd is behind him, you should be going out of your way to make merchandise and book and protect this guy because you have lightning in a bottle. But that was not the case, and instead they had to go out of their way to make me look bad. When I found days before that I was not going over, but that they wanted me to fall on my face with my finish and look like an idiot, I said there was no way I was doing that.
As you saw with that finish, it made zero sense from a booking standpoint to book me to fall flat on my face, and then the next night to turn me heel. The reaction to my heel turn was louder than ever, and then what did Vince do? I lost the momentum, and I never got it back again. Every wrestler in the history of the business has lobbied that they would be successful if the company simply booked them properly, but Ryback had the pay-per-view buys and merchandise numbers to back up his claim.
I could have been the number one merchandise seller had they given me all the merchandise we should have had. When I was used in a good fashion, people believed in it. A lot of it was my work and the way that I look, as well as my believability and me believing in myself, so why would you throw that away? They had a guy who can make them numbers, and the name of the game is making money, so that always frustrated me.
Working hard allowed me the opportunity to showcase my talent on their platform. My decision to no longer work there comes down to business. Having the opportunity, hitting a home run time and time again, and not having the other end reciprocate the effort I was putting in was my issue. Ryback broke his ankle in a tag team match in , and did not return for nearly a year-and-a-half after undergoing three surgeries.
Nerve damage still exists in his ankle, and the incident created a great deal of tension between himself and WWE. Ryback generated interested with his new bully gimmick in August of , but he noted that those plans were quickly scrapped.
